The Red Land Area Women’s Club is an outgrowth of the concern of local women toward proposed changes in the alignment of schools that would mean the loss of our local high school. Through the efforts of the group, town meetings were held, concerns about the changes were addressed, and we retained the high school in our area.
Through the years the club and its members have:
o Supported the Jane Miller Dental Fund through the West Shore School District
o Landscaped the Community Building
o Planted and lighted a Christmas tree at the local Community Building
o Erected and maintained a “Peace on Earth” sign at the Community Building
o Supported the Science Center at Pinchot Park
o Sponsored Easter Egg hunts
o Volunteered at the Elizabethtown Children’s Hospital
o Volunteered in the schools in our area
o Sponsored a town meeting on the needs of York County such as environmental, zoning, land use, human needs, etc.
o Provided community assistance in the wake of Hurricane Agnes and Hurricane Eloise
o Successfully assisted in efforts to keep a landfill out of Fairview Township
o Helped to start and assisted at a local health clinic
o Sponsored Lunch with Santa and gift shop
o Supported our local libraries, fire companies, and senior citizens
o Sponsored walks and bike rides for Retarded Citizens
o Contributed to March of Dimes, United Way, American Cancer Society, and the Period Rooms at the State Museum
o Purchased and donated a wheelchair to the Lions Club Lending Closet
o Read to residents at the Woodlawn Center Nursing Home
o Purchased and donated engraving tools to the Fairview Township Police Department
o Contributed to the Federation sponsored County Nursing Scholarship
o Provided nightgowns for Operation Smile
o Furnished information for Cut it Out, the Domestic Violence initiative
o Collected many items for HUGS
o Maintained a three mile section of highway through the PennDot program
o Sold bracelets to raise money for Sean Brame’s medical fund and donated money to the fund for Brian Keefer
Fundraising efforts included:
o Dress Clubs
o Craft bazaars
o Club cookbooks
o Sub sales, sales of Federation sponsored items, sale of Christmas wreathes
o Silent auctions
o Apple butter at the New Cumberland Apple Festival
o Soup and bake sales at the polls
o Plant sales at the Red Land Community Library
o Pie Sales
o Note card sales using member photography
o Dining Out Events
o Yard Sales
- Plays at Oyster Mill Playhouse
